A forecast large band of high cloud had kept us on high alert for several days, but we woke (at 4am after a few hours of very uncomfortable sleep) to quickly clearing skies with the cloud band dissipating and moving south-west, in close alignment with models. Friday 18th - Table Mountain Hike for the First TimeĪ full day hike to the summit of Table Mountain to explore locations to setup an automated camera, three days before the eclipse, with a view over the Teton's Range. I'd done this before :-).Īlong the way I managed to lose my Spot Satellite tracking device which caused some issues for the other more remote hiking plans I had. an 18kg AZ-EQ6 equatorial mount from home, a smaller purchased AZ-EQ5 equatorial mount, and four Canon 5D Mark IV DSLRs from Lens Rentals - the boxes included a specific warning notice about damage from the sun during the eclipse NOT being covered by their insurance. On Tuesday I unpacked about a dozen boxes of gear I had freighted, purchased or rented for the eclipse (and all of which I had to pick up from Jackson Lake Lodge two hours away the night before). These three days were a blur of preparation and location scouting, and trying to sleep while recovering from jet lag. The location was a little challenging for the tour group as most of their landscape photography plans were on the east side of the Teton ranges in Wyoming (1-2 hours each way) but Idaho worked out great for me. ![]() So we will be forever grateful to Josh and Misty at Teton Peaks who having had other groups cancel were very supportive and found ways to accommodate us all and helped through the whole week. However, that fell through as did Plan B. We had expected to be staying at Jackson Lake Lodge on the east side of the Tetons and an hour to the north. ![]() We drove to Jackson, Wyoming (the centre of the eclipse universe in this case) and then onto Teton Peaks Lodge and RV, our hastily arranged accommodation for the night which was an hour to the west of the Tetons. The following programmes/series were recently made available in Ultra HD format via iPlayer: While it is wonderful to see a greater volume of Ultra HD content produced by the BBC, it’s not yet a match for its rivals in terms of content breadth. Falling further behind its online streaming rivals, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus (which all offer a broad range of Ultra HD content) would do nothing for its cause. Time will tell, but at least we can now enjoy a broader range of BBC Ultra HD content and hope that this signals an upward trajectory in Ultra HD content volume for the coming year. Surely, it’s time for the BBC to launch a full, mainstream service? We cannot remember a time when the BBC has received more criticism, and its viability (based on licence fee funding) in the midst of strengthening streaming rivals is increasingly being called into question. Now we are in 2021, it feels like the trial has gone on for too long now. ![]() The BBC’s Ultra HD trial started in 2016. Sadly, the BBC has lagged behind its streaming competitors in embracing Ultra HD, and seems stuck in what it terms an Ultra HD’ ‘trial’. We have been tracking Ultra HD developments at the BBC for quite some time, and the following updated page summarises developments from the very beginning:īBC iPlayer Ultra HD (4k) Demonstrates Amazing Picture Quality Sky has already announced its intention to shows Olympic coverage in Ultra HD HDR. 2021 will see continued rapid growth in sales of Ultra HD TVs, with the Olympics this year expected to showcase how Ultra HD can dramatically enhance the viewing experience. For example, Netflix’s series ‘The Crown’ has proved very popular and has looked incredible. Ultra HD – which requires significantly higher broadband speeds than HD – will rapidly become the ‘expected’ format for many households. Streamed TV services are the ‘killer application’ for superfast and ultrafast broadband, and a key reason for upgrading broadband packages. The coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns have helped fuel the adoption of streamed TV services, with big-budget players such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+ and Disney Plus offering an impressive range of Ultra HD content. We also suspect that the improved picture quality will really help the BBC to sell its flagship programmes to an international audience. ![]() For anyone seeking demonstrations of how the Ultra HD with HDR can dramatically enhance the viewing experience, these programmes fit the bill perfectly. Two standouts are the incredible ‘A Perfect Planet’ narrated by David Attenborough and ‘Dr Who’ (broadcast on New Year’s Day). The 6SN7 is a very common dual triode, but the 6SJ7 is rather unusual in current amplifiers. The tube choice is a bit unusual, comprising two output tubes per channel–normally KT88s or KT150s (KT120s will also work)-and one 6SJ7 and one 6SN7 low-level tube per channel. However, there’s a fair chance none of those controls would ever be used, so leaving them off makes financial sense. There’s no mute control, balance control, mono switch, or phase-inversion switch, either, all of which might have been useful. I don’t know that the VU meters serve a functional purpose, but they surely look cool, with their blue illumination matching the status window on the right. The right half of the faceplate is reserved for two VU meters. To the right of the switches and information window is the silver, serrated, single-knob volume control, CNC-machined from aluminum. The labels for the switches are engraved in the front panel, which looks nice but in my view is harder to read than painted labels. The faceplate has, from left to right, four toggle switches (power on/off, standby, mode, and input) along the lower part, with a blue information window on the upper part. (I’d welcome more color departures from black chassis. I thought the combination of the brushed aluminum faceplate and transformer trim plate with the red paint on the chassis looked quite elegant and attractive. The red color is not a garish, bright hue, but sort of a candy apple red. In a departure from the norm, the chassis is painted red instead of the usual Boring Black. The Corona is built on a wide, flat chassis with a silver, brushed-aluminum faceplate in the front, tubes in the central area, and in the rear a transformer that spans the full width of the chassis. The Corona has the typical integrated amp advantages: It requires no preamp-to-amp interconnect, and it occupies just a single shelf, albeit a very sturdy, well-ventilated shelf. Rogers makes a very interesting phono preamp, the PA-2, which is definitely worthwhile considering to match to the Corona, but doesn’t offer a DAC or headphone amp. You know exactly which of those units suits your system, and don’t want to waste money on the type of limited or compromised integral DAC, phono preamp, or headphone amp that’s typically included in some integrated amps. This makes sense to me if you’re willing to shell out $15,000 for the Corona, you’re probably a very serious listener who wants an advanced stand-alone DAC, phono preamp, and headphone amp. There’s no DAC, no phono preamp, no headphone amp. The Corona deliberately leaves out features that can be found on several other integrated amps. Just specify when you buy the amp which output tubes you want. Rogers High Fidelity’s new Corona KWM-88 integrated amplifier’s automatic bias circuitry makes it possible to switch between KT88s and KT150s. Just insert the new tubes and the bias circuitry changes the necessary parameters. So if an amplifier is shipped with E元4s, you can change them to KT88s and the automatic-bias circuit will adjust the bias to suit the KT88s with no adjustment from the user. Those circuits make it feasible to switch easily between different types of tubes. One of the more recent computerized hi-fi circuits sets the bias current of the output tubes on tube amplifiers. Your car is full of computers that make it eas ier to operate and maintain why shouldn’t your hi-fi follow suit? Increasingly, that’s what’s happening. ![]() So they, except Elrond and Gil-galad, hearkened to him and his teaching. His fair words, aided by his fair appearance, were very much in accord with what the Elves wanted. Sauron wished to help restore Middle-earth after the hurts done to it in the War of Wrath. Just like in the case of his joining Morgoth, his initial motives were fair or, at least, veiled in fair forms. Moreover, he was used to the power he enjoyed in the service of Morgoth and was not prepared to lose it. ![]() That Sauron could not do for fear of humiliation. In comparison, Morgoth lost the ability to change his appearance at will at the very beginning of the First Age, was no longer able to veil his malice by good looks and became permanently incarnate.Īfter the downfall of Morgoth in the War of Wrath, Sauron repented, though it was out of fear, but as Manwë’s herald Eönwë could not grant pardon to those of his own race, Sauron was to go to Valinor and there face Manwë himself. It was not to last, though, as Sauron’s further way was a downward spiral. Well into the Second Age he was still able to assume a fair form, which shows that he was not yet so utterly corrupted to the point of being unable to look handsome any more. For a very lengthy period of time the Maia served another, so he did not fall so low and did not dissipate his powers like Morgoth did. Sauron joined the service of Morgoth in the already corrupted world. He did not have Morgoth’s sheer nihilism, and thus was able to retain rational thought and keep his actions cunning and thought-out. Still, a look into Sauron’s motives and his personal story reveals him as a wiser, more sensible and reasonable villain than Morgoth. His service on the dark side infected Sauron with Morgoth’s lust for power, and eventually his fair endeavours went seriously astray. It was Morgoth’s ability to bring Sauron’s designs into life quickly and efficiently that played a key role in his desire to join the Dark Ainu’s forces. Add to this his admiration of strength, and Sauron’s motives for switching sides become very clear. The Maia loved order and disliked any kind of fuss. However, it was a virtue that attracted Sauron into Morgoth’s service and later caused his downfall. Because of his deeds the peoples of Middle-earth referred to him either as Sauron - the Abhorred, or Gorthaur - Terrible Dread. His pride was already swelling as the Maia’s power as Morgoth’s lieutenant was great. ![]() Originally Sauron, who was known as Mairon (the Admirable) at that time, was associated with the people of Aulë, so he was a very skillful smith.Īs the Maia changed allegiance, his name Mairon was no longer used by other peoples, though he himself kept on calling himself Tar-Mairon - King Excellent - until the time after the downfall of Númenor (1). He came into existence before the physical world took shape. Sauron belonged to the Maiar - spirits created from Ilúvatar’s thought. His downfall arose out of good motives, nor was he the beginner of discord. Having risen like the shadow of Morgoth, Sauron was nevertheless different from his former lord. How did he become the evil figure we know him to be? Why did he run the risk of transferring a great amount of his inherent power into the One Ring knowing that it could lead to his destruction? Let us look at his downfall and motives through Tolkien’s own stories and letters. The "the" was just distracting and meaningless.Īll in all, I didn't particularly enjoy these stories, but I think younger readers might.Being the chief villain of the Second and Third Ages, Sauron sparks numerous questions concerning his motives. No one else in his story is referred to that way (they all just have a name). One other small criticism I have (because I found it awkward and annoying to read): the final protagonist is called "The Archer". The stories themselves were somewhat boring as well (the earlier ones more so than the latter ones). I found the four protagonists to be quite childish (except maybe the 4th one), and yet, the stories did contain some mature content (particularly numbers 3 and 4), so I'm not sure who the intended audience is supposed to be. I haven't read the novel that these short stories are related to, but I don't think that made a difference. The 10+ hours of battery life makes these devices apt for the outdoors, whether it’s a hiking trip, camping trip, or poolside party. The folks at Sound Guys tested this speaker and found it to last just a little over 9 hours. It still has a decent battery life and can last up to 12 hours on moderate volume. If we talk numbers, it takes just 4 hours for a full charge.Īt the same time, the JBL Flip 6 doesn’t bundle a huge battery. At the same time, the USB-C charging fastens the charging process. Provided you do not blast music at high volume and have a good connection, it should last you that long. Thankfully, JBL and Bose did add a sizeable battery to these speakers. Hence a longer battery life on these portable Bluetooth speakers seems apt. The JBL Flip 6 and the SoundLink Flex are built for the outdoors. As you may already know, this option is missing in the Bose SoundLink Flex. The best part is that you can tweak the EQ, per your preference. However, note that it will switch to stereo only when you pair it with a JBL speaker of the same gen. You can pair it with another JBL speaker to amplify the volume output. And like its counterpart above, it also has a PartyBoost Mode. The JBL speaker also comes with its own JBL Portable app. It means your phone must always be connected to the speaker for this to work. However, it’s not a smart speaker and doesn’t have Wi-Fi. The good news is that you can enable the Party Mode directly from the speaker.Īt the same time, the Voice Prompts allow you to use voice assistants like Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant through your phone. The former makes it easy to connect the speaker to other Bose speakers for an amplified sound. The companion app, Bose Connect, brings a handful of features, including Party Mode and Voice Prompts. Most portable speakers come with a smart companion app, and the SoundLink Flex is no exception. However, JBL has excluded high-quality Bluetooth codecs like aptX or LDAC from this portable Bluetooth speaker. The new version of Bluetooth has a comparatively better range and bandwidth. Regarding connectivity, the JBL 6 comes bundled with Bluetooth 5.1. On top of that, you do not have to worry about sand and grit getting stuck behind the grille. And this makes it perfect for beach parties. Unlike the SoundLink Flex, this one can also survive a dip in salt water. One of the best things about this JBL speaker is its IP67 rating. If we talk numbers, it weighs around 1.12 lbs, and you can easily carry it in your tote bag or outdoor bag. Like its counterpart, the Flip 6 is also ‘almost’ lightweight. The grille goes around the device, except for the spine, which bundles the Power button. It has the same cylindrical look with plastic bumpers on either side. The JBL Flip 6 looks very similar to its predecessor – JBL Flip 5. However, the folks at CNET felt that the connectivity was solid and the speaker rarely dropped the connection. So that’s a little bummer for SoundLink Flex. The latest crop of portable speakers sports Bluetooth 5.1 or Bluetooth 5.2. For now, the SoundLink Flex comes with Bluetooth 4.2. When it comes to connectivity, unfortunately, Bose has still stayed with the older version of Bluetooth. And irrespective of the device’s placement, it will balance the sound. Interestingly, the PositionIQ tech inside adjusts the audio output as per the placement. It’s a versatile device and can be laid on its back or propped up. It’s worth noting that while the silicone layer adds a smooth finish, it also attracts dust and lint. At the same time, the smooth silicone exterior does its duty of absorbing the impact of minor bumps and falls. It barely weighs 1.23lb and doesn’t add much bulk, especially if you want to carry it on your hiking trip. Though it’s a hardy speaker, it’s lightweight and portable. Interestingly, it can also float on water. The IP67 rating makes it safe from water and dust damage. And like its predecessor, it boasts a solid build.
